On Monday (17/11/08) we had our school sports day. All the children in Room 11 took part in the events. Some of the children did very well, Molly came first in long jump and 80m sprints, Olly won the high jump and 800m, and Rachael won the ball throw. Room 11 came third in the class relay. It was a good day out, just a pity the weather wasn't nicer.

Bread
Our topic for the fourth term is Bread. We are going to design our own loaf of bread using the results of a class survey, we will also package and advertise the bread we make.
To start with we learned how to make a white loaf of bread so we could better understand how bread is made.

Room 11's Marble runs
In Term 3 we looked at forces. I gave the children the challenge of making marble runs, and the extra challenge of getting the marble to defy gravity. The class come up with inventive ways to do this. One was a loop de loop, others used pulley systems to bring the marble up. They were not allowed to touch the marble while it was in the marble run.

Art Exhibition
All term Room 11 has been working towards the art exhibition. We drew abstract portraits. First we studied abstract art by artists such as Picasso. Then we drew a chalk outline of the face. Our next step was to fill in the spaces using brightly coloured oil pastels. Finally we got black dye and carefully went over the chalk outlines. We are really proud of the work we did. Our collaborative project was also an abstract portrait but was done with paint instead. We used our fingers and brushes to paint it, and have put modelling clay to get the 3D effects.

EOTC Week
Here are some photos from EOTC week in Term 1
On Monday the children all tried Orienteering at Waiatarua Reserve. They all did extremely well in very hot conditions. A highlight for me was seeing Pukekos for the first time.
Sports day was on the Tuesday, the children rotated around 8 sports, which included soccer, t-ball, hockey, dodgeball, target ball, and cricket. The children played in the house teams.
On the Wednesday Room 11 went to Butterfly Creek and spent the day interacting with various farm animals and beautiful butterflies. In the afternoon their eye/hand coordination was challenged with a game of Mini Golf.
Rock Climbing on Thursday was a major highlight for Room 11. They saw Miss Pinder attempt a rock climb for the first time (shaking the entire way up). Everyone was very brave and each time they climbed tried to reach higher than they had on the previous climb.
A big thanks to all the parents who helped make the week so successful and enjoyable.

Room 11 and 12 Assembly
Our Assembly was on Force and Measuring Time. To start off with we played a traditional New Zealand love song called Pokarekare Ana. We did some skits on Forces and then a small play about how ancient civilisations measured time. We finished by doing the "time warp"

Studying Culture
BubbleShare: Share photos - Powered by BubbleShare
In Room 11 we have been studying culture. We first looked at what we thought culture was. We used a define map to come up with a definition. We then looked at New Zealand culture. We used Koru shapes to represent ourselves and our families. We then looked at Japanese culture. We have made Origami (or Japanese paper folding). In small groups we took an aspect of culture like landmarks, clothes, music and food. We then went out to look at the similarities and differences between New Zealand and Japanese culture.

Welcome to Room 11's Blog
Hi,
I have created a blog site so that Room 11 can display some of their work. It will give family and friends a chance to see what they are doing in class, and comment on it. Also, feel free to look at our class website at http://www.meadowbank.school.nz
